Why do some drivers opt to not purchase insurance?

In order to drive our vehicles legally, purchasing auto insurance is a requirement that we all must fulfill. Taking all factors into account, carrying insurance is clearly preferable to taking on the risks of the road without financial coverage.

So why are there uninsured drivers on the road? The Consumer Federation of America put together a report which examined the obstacles that some drivers face in regard to purchasing insurance.

The CFA report cites that according to several studies conducted by the Insurance Research Council, drivers with low incomes hold a greater likelihood of being uninsured than drivers with higher incomes. The CFA study also maintains that among all the states there is a strong relationship between uninsured rates and poverty.

The CFA report goes on to stipulate that a key reason for lower income drivers to forgo buying insurance is because it is not affordable. Yet, a car may be a necessity. The study quotes a policy brief from the Brookings Institute that stresses the idea that a car is essentially required to traverse sprawling metropolitan areas.

Also within the report, the president of an organization called Vehicles for Change asserts that often insurance premiums can actually cost more than car payments. So the CFA report accentuates one of the biggest conundrums that puts uninsured drivers on the road: there is the need for a car to travel to work, but income from work is not enough to pay for the car and insurance.

The purpose of this post is not to excuse anyone who drives without insurance, but rather to highlight the fact that the problem of uninsured driving will likely be with us for some time to come. And when someone who is not carrying insurance, for whatever reason, gets in an accident, it usually leaves the victims in an especially difficult predicament.

Compensation may be hard to secure if you are in an accident caused by an uninsured driver. Therefore, should such an unfortunate event ever take place, you may want to think about contacting a Montana attorney who handles uninsured driver claims.
