The safest cars to buy in 2020

When you get in an accident, the type of car that you are in can make a world of a difference. If you’re looking to buy a new vehicle this year, you may want to consider choosing one with a high safety rating.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) assesses vehicle testing every year and releases their top choices for the safest options. Here are some of 2020 The Top Safety Pick+ vehicles:

  • Small car: 2020 Honda Insight 4-door sedan
  • Midsized and large car: 2020 Mazda 6 4-door sedan
  • Large car: 2020 Audi A6 4-door sedan
  • SUVs: 2020 Subaru Forester 4-door SUV

The criteria for a car to be named a Top Safety Pick+ is based upon a series of testing. They must have a highest rating of “good” on tests for the driver and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. These tests use crash-test dummies and have the vehicle hit objects straight-on and at the front right corner. They test how the vehicle responds to and protects occupants of the car in severs crashes and even roll-overs.

These vehicles have either advanced or superior ratings for front crash prevention, both in tests with other vehicles and pedestrians. The tests assess collision warnings and automatic emergency braking systems to show how they slow down before impact and alter drivers.

Finally, they have acceptable or good headlights. They test how headlights increase visibility on both straight and curved roads, how they impact the vision of oncoming drivers and automatic high-beam features.

Each of these vehicles have special certification that let you know that they will help keep your family safe. While no one expects to be in an accident, it’s always smart to invest in extra safety features that will protect you if you are in a crash.
